As medical advisor to the life’sDHA Index of Brain Health, Dr. Michael Roizen helped design the index metrics, providing medical expertise, and shaping the direction of the index.
Named to “Best Doctors in America” or its successor publication, “America’s Top Doctors,” every year since 1989, Dr. Michael Roizen is one of the most respected and compelling medical experts in the world today. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Williams College and Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, Dr. Roizen is an internal medicine physician and anesthesiologist certified by both the American Boards of Internal Medicine and of Anesthesiology.
As cofounder and chair of the RealAge Inc. Scientific Advisory Board, Dr. Roizen is the force behind RealAge, a patented measurement standard for health care that compares biological versus calendar age, based upon 149 factors that can influence the rate of aging. This health metric has received widespread consumer, medical and scientific acceptance. As a practicing internist (he has retired as an anesthesiologist after chairing two departments for more than 20 years in anesthesia, critical care and pain management), Dr. Roizen uses the RealAge metric to motivate his patients. He routinely sees patients who are struggling with tobacco, heart, diabetic, obesity, and arthritic problems and coaches them with simple but persistent lifestyle changes so that they may live, feel, look and “be” years younger. He has successfully helped many of his patients reduce or eliminate the need for medications and focuses on teaching the role of diet, exercise, stress management and other simple steps in reversing disease processes.
In addition to his role as a physician, Dr. Roizen is a successful businessman, author and media expert. Dr. Roizen has received 13 U.S. and numerous foreign patents, founded and successfully been involved in the sale of three companies (he has been involved in founding six more, of which four still exist) and has published more than 165 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 100 textbook chapters, 30 editorials and four medical books, including one medical best-seller.
His first general audience book, “RealAge: Are You as Young as You Can Be?” (HarperCollins Publishers) was a No. 1 New York Times best-seller, a No-1 best-seller in four other countries, and it has been translated into more than 24 languages. Other books include the New York Times best-seller, “The RealAge Diet: Make Yourself Younger with What You Eat” (HarperCollins), written with Dr. John La Puma; “Cooking the RealAge Way” (Harper Collins), also with Dr. La Puma; and “The RealAge Makeover” (HarperCollins). In 2005, Dr. Roizen teamed with Health Corps founder Dr. Mehmet Oz to write “YOU: The Owner’s Manual” (HarperCollins), a No. 1 New York Times best-seller that has sold more than 4.4 million hardcover copies worldwide, and translated into more than 44 languages. It was a No.1 best-seller in five other countries. It was followed by the New York Times best-seller “YOU: The Smart Patient” and “YOU: On A Diet, the Owner’s Manual for Waist Management” which debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times list, where it stayed for 11 consecutive weeks, becoming the second best-selling book of 2006. It also has been No. 1 in several other countries.
The next book by Drs. Roizen and Oz, “YOU: Staying Young, The Owner’s Manual for Extending Your Warranty,” debuted in November 2007 at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list. The book is also listed by People magazine as the No. 3-selling book in the world in 2007. In 2008, Drs. Roizen and Oz authored another New York Times best-seller, “YOU: Being Beautiful, the Owner’s Manual to Inner and Outer Beauty.” Drs. Roizen and Oz received an Elle (best magazine article) in 2009 for their publication in Esquire in July 2008, and a Books for Better Life Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. They do not consider themselves over-the-hill: they plan to release “YOU Are Pregnant: The Owner’s Manual to a Happy and Healthy Pregnancy” in December 2009. Dr. Roizen is scheduled to be the medical director of the Dr. Oz TV show scheduled to debut on national television on September 14, 2009.
Dr. Roizen has been a regular guest on numerous national television programs including “The Oprah Winfrey Show” (17 times), “The Today Show,” “20/20” (three times), CBN (28 times), CNN, CBS, “Good Morning America” (28 times), “Canada AM” (28 times); hosted PBS fundraising specials, including a RealAge makeover show that was one of the top PBS fundraisers for 2006; and has been featured regularly in print, including coverage in Fortune, O Magazine, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Ladies’ Home Journal, Prevention and Biography to name a few.
