Norman Salem

Norman Salem, Jr., Ph.D.

Dr. Salem is the senior scientific fellow for Nutritional Lipids at DSM Nutritional Products.  He focuses his research activities on DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), ARA (arachidonic acid) and other essential fatty acids. Prior to entering the corporate world, Dr. Salem was the chief of the Laboratory of Membrane Biochemistry & Biophysics within the Intramural Research Program of the National Institutes on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where he worked for 30 years. While at the NIH, he studied DHA composition, metabolism and biological function with an emphasis on the nervous system. An author of more than 285 scientific publications, Dr. Salem received his B.S. degree in physics from Miami University and his Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of Rochester School of Medicine.  He did his postdoctoral work at the NIH in the Neurology (NINDS) Institute.
