Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is marked by a loss in central vision, which means that people suffering from the condition cannot read or recognize faces.

There are several lifestyle tips to make sure you’re protecting two very important assets – your eyes.

Tip 1 – Get moving. Exercise isn’t just good for your waist size, it can also help to reduce eye pressure, which is important in supporting healthy eye function. Research published in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science showed that frequent vigorous exercise may help to reduce the prevalence of AMD in women.

Tip 2 – What’s good for your heart and brain is good for your eyes – especially when it comes to nutrition. The connections aren’t too surprising – your eyes rely on tiny arteries for oxygen and nutrients just like your brain does, and your heart relies on much larger arteries. Keeping all those arteries healthy will help your vision throughout life. Make sure your diet includes a mix of vitamins and eye-healthy nutrients, including lutein, zeaxanthin, DHA and EPA omega-3s and the vitamins A, C and E.  You can find these nutrients in a variety of foods, beverages and dietary supplements.

Tip 3 – Sunglasses aren’t just a fashion statement or wardrobe accessory, they serve an important role in protecting your vision. No matter how well you eat or how much exercise you get, you can reduce your risk of experiencing vision problems even further by wearing UVA-blocking sunglasses.
